Through thick, thin and hurricanes, the staff was like family

After 30 years at the Honolulu Advertiser, there are a lot of memories, and most of them are good.
Because the sports staff is family, we were able to meet all deadlines (or come close) and put out a section despite hurricanes, floods and late-ending events.
We even put out a sports section on Sept. 12, 1992, a day after Hurricane Iniki hit the Hawaiian Islands, causing major power failures for most of O'ahu.
With our computers down we (myself, Ann Miller, Nico Van Thyn and the Big One, Mary Hile) waited with a few candles and flashlights.
Not knowing if and when power would be restored, we played cards and had a few beers.
When power was finally restored, we filled the section with wire copy and a local story of sporting events being canceled by the hurricane.
It was fun, exciting, and a real rush knowing we all could have been blown away with the hurricane.
