UH strength coordinator walks for his daughter

 •  More women enjoy taking jab at boxing

University of Hawai'i Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Tommy Heffernan will walk 37 miles to benefit his daughter, Hilina'i.

The event will take place June 12 from Hau'ula Elementary School to Variety School in Diamond Head.

Hilina'i suffers from developmental delays, hypotonia and emotional outbursts.

Her condition requires extended work with physical, occupational, speech and psychological therapists. The family's goal is to raise money so Hilina'i can attend Variety School, a school that specializes in special needs children.

GOALKEEPER CLINIC

The Bob Barry Goalkeeper Clinic for ages 8 to 18 will be held in July.

The first session is July 24-25 at Damien Memorial School and the second session is July 31-Aug. 1 at Mililani.

Each session costs $130 and will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

VOLLEYBALL CLINICS

The East Oahu Boys Volleyball Club will hold volleyball clinics for girls and boys, ages 10 to 15, this month and next month.

One clinic is Fridays from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Holy Nativity School, 5286 Kalaniana'ole Hwy.

The other is Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity School Gym, 5919 Kalaniana'ole Hwy.

Camp at Maryknoll: NBA Rookie of the Year Tyreke Evans of the Sacramento Kings and Steve Blake of the Los Angeles Clippers will Headline 1 a development basketball camp June 8-10 at the Clarence T.C. Ching gym at Maryknoll. Several current and former coaches from Hawai'i Pacific University and local high schools also will assist in the camp. It is open to boys and girls entering the third to 12th grades. Camp for third- to sixth-graders will be 9 a.m. to noon and seventh to 12th graders from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Cost is $150 with proceeds to benefit various Honolulu charities, including Shriners Hospital in Honolulu and more. Derrick Low Clinic: The second annual Derrick Low-Hawai'i Raiders Basketball Clinic will be held June 19-20 at Kalani High School gym. Heading the clinic will be Low, a former 'Iolani School and Washington State University star who is now playing professionally in Europe. Also instructing will be former 'Iolani stars Kyle Pape, the 2005 All-State Player of the Year, and Kainoa Chu, the 2010 All-State co-Player of the Year, as well as Dennis Agena, founder of the Kalakaua Clinic. The clinic is for boys and girls ages 8 to 17. Beginners sessions will be held 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. with advanced from noon to 3 p.m. The cost is $75 and includes a sports bag, prizes, awards and an autograph session.
