Honolulu firefighters contained a brushfire in Waiawa this afternoon after being challenged by strong winds, steep terrain and difficult access.
The fire was off Mililani Cemetery Road, in an area of former sugar cane land, and was not a threat to any property.
Fire Capt. Terry Seelig said the fire was moving on the leeward flank of the gully.
About 30 firefighters with five engines, three water tankers, two helicopters and an aircraft tender fought to contain the approximately 30-acre fire.
The fire was reported about 2:30 this morning. Firefighters had the blaze contained by 5 and under control by 5:30. But firefighters had to return after winds started to fan the fire again. It was finally contained at 3 p.m.
