Fire crews rescue stranded kayaker off Maunalua Bay
Honolulu Fire Department rescue crews pulled a stranded kayaker from the waters offshore Maunalua Bay yesterday morning.
A rescue watercraft brought the man ashore about noon, Honolulu fire Capt. Earle Kealoha said.
The man, who was in his 50s, may have been taking part in a kayak race held in the bay.
The 11:30 a.m. call for help originated from another man who, after assisting the stranded kayaker, came ashore to make the 911 call, Kealoha said.
The caller said the man's kayak came apart, leaving him stranded.
Firefighters, lifeguards and the Coast Guard responded with watercraft and a helicopter.
