Hawaii House passes U.S. flag bill

Associated Press

HONOLULU — A measure to force planned communities to allow flagpoles displaying American or state flags has unanimously passed the state House of Representatives.

The House gave its go-ahead to the bill Tuesday, sending it to the Senate for further consideration.
Representatives had rejected an effort last month to revive the measure after it initially failed to get committee approval.
But then the Housing Committee held another hearing on it and passed it after listening to testimony from impassioned military veterans.
House Republicans pushed the bill on behalf of Ewa resident Harold Alejandro. His community rules prevented him from hanging a U.S. flag in memory of two airmen killed in an explosion in Iraq.
