College baseball: The Citadel beats Hawai‘i, 12-8

David Greene’s two out, two-run home capped a four-run seventh to rally The Citadel past 12-8, tonight in the opener of a four-game series at Les Murakami Stadium.
Chris Boyce (2-0) allowed a hit in two-thirds of an inning for the Bulldogs (6-1). Drew Mahaffey pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief for his fourth save.
Alex Capaul (2-1) allowed the two-run homer for the Rainbows (4-5).
The Bulldogs jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first. Nick Orvin led off with a double to right-center, took third when Brad Felder grounded out to second and scored when Matt Simonelli did the same.
The Rainbows tied it in the bottom of the first. Breland Almadova led off by reaching first on a passed ball on a swinging third strike. An out later, he went to third on a run-and-hit single by Kolten Wong. After Kevin Macdonald fouled out to first, Clarkson balked to score Almadova and send Wong to second Collin Bennett walked to put runners at first and second. Both advanced on a wild pitch, but were stranded in scoring position when David Freitas flied out to deep center.
The Citadel regained the lead in the third. Orvin reached on a wind-blown triple to left with one out and scored when Felder grounded out to first to increased the Bulldogs’ lead to 2-1.
Hawai‘i tied it in the bottom of the third on a one out, solo home run by Greg Garcia.
The Bulldogs regained the lead in the top of the fifth with two walks and a two out, RBI single from Felder. Simonelli followed with an RBI single to make it 4-2.
Hawai‘i sent eight batters to the plate in a four-run sixth to take the lead. Wong singled to right and Macdonald walked. Bennett fouled out on a bunt to the catcher, but David Freitas grounded a double to left to score Wong and move Macdonald to third. Jeff Van Doornum followed with a two-run double to right to put UH ahead, 5-4. Clarkson was pulled for Chris Boyce, who gave up a single to Pi‘ikea Kitamura to put runners at the corners. Sean Montplaisir’s sacrifice fly to right scored Van Doornum to make it 6-4. Kitamura advanced to second on right fielder Simonelli’s throwing error to the infield. Almadova struck out to end the inning.
The Bulldogs stormed back for four in the sixth to take an 8-6 lead. William Ladd was hit by a pitch to start the inning. After one out, Ladd stole second and scored on Felder’s single by shortstop Garcia to pull The Citadel to 6-5. Klein was pulled for Alex Capaul. Felder stole second on Capaul’s first pitch and scored on Simonelli’s double to center to tie the game at 6. Simonelli went to third when Bryan Altman grounded out to short. But David Greene hit a towering two-run home run to left to give The Citadel an 8-6 lead. After running a 2-0 count on Kyle Jordan, Capaul was lifted for Connor Little. Jordan walked, but Justin Mackert struck out to end the inning.
The Bulldogs added to their lead in the eighth. Legare Jones walked to start the inning, went to second on Ladd’s sacrifice and moved to third when Orvin reached on a single to short. With the infield drawn in, Felder grounded out to first, as the runners held. But Simonelli singled up the middle to second to score Jones to make it 9-6. Little was pulled for Harrison Kuroda, whose wild pitch scored a run and sent the other to second before Altman lined out to center.
The Rainbows pulled to 10-8 in the eighth. Montplaisir and Christian Johnson hit successive singles with two out and Garcia ripped the 10th offering from Raymond Copenhaver to right-center for a two-run triple to pull UH to 10-8. Copenhaver was lifted for Drew Mahaffey, who walked Kolten Wong to put runners at the corners. But Macdonald struck out to end the inning.
The Bulldogs continued their assault in the ninth. Greene singled, took second and third on wild pitches and after Jordan struck out, scored on Mackert’s single to right. Jones walked and Kuroda was pulled for Blair Walters. Ladd reached on an RBI single to make it 12-8.
