New police station for Kīhei gets final council approval

Advertiser Staff

The Maui County Council has given unanimous final approval for work to begin on the long-awaited new police station in South Kīhei, the Maui News reported.

Police and Mayor Charmaine Tavares' administration have said they would like to break ground in June on the $40 million, two-story complex on Piilani Highway.

Also on Friday, council members voted to put $1.5 million toward renovating the Ichiro "Iron" Maehara Baseball Stadium and to finally build a new West Maui skateboard park, a project promised years ago to west-side kids.

Funding for the projects comes from a combination of general obligation bonds and park assessment fees paid by developers. The county council also voted to forward $200,000 toward the projects from developer fees originally intended for the Kehalani Maui Park in the Wailuku subdivision. To complete the $1 million skate park, the county also received a $420,000 federal grant.

Budget and Finance Committee chairman Joe Pontanilla said the county is tapping the Kehalani money for the baseball stadium and skate park because the Kehalani developers are not ready to move forward yet with plans for their neighborhood park.

The baseball stadium, in particular, needed additional funds once contractors started work recently and a number of serious structural problems were discovered, Pontanilla said.

Also Friday, council members approved plans for a county-developed 400-unit affordable-housing project on 73 acres on Lāna'i.
