Lifeguards warn of jellyfish, post signs, offer sting advice

The monthly influx of box jellyfish to south shore beaches resulted in 600 of the stinging creatures being spotted at Waikīkī Beach yesterday and another 75 at Ala Moana Beach Park.
Lifeguards posted warning signs at both beaches. Today is the last day of the three-day jellyfish period each month.
"Ocean Safety personnel would like to remind beachgoers to heed all warning signs and to please check with them before entering the water today," Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department, said in a written statement.
Ocean Safety said people stung by box jellyfish are advised to flush the sting area with white vinegar. Anyone experiencing breathing difficulty, muscle cramps, spasms and/or persistent pain are advised to seek immediate medical attention.
