Aloha Yamaguchi's first game as Kamehameha softball coach yesterday had a rough first inning.

But things quickly turned and the Warriors overwhelmed Maryknoll, 20-3, at Mō'ili'ili field in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu opener for both teams.

"I think they had to get the nervousness out and once they got the flow of the rhythm of the game, they stayed in there," Yamaguchi said of her team.

Maryknoll took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning on RBI singles by Kori Nishitomi, Brianna Guro and Kiana Fuller.

Guro's RBI was the most notable because she squeezed in Nishitomi on a 1-2 pitch. The Kamehameha first baseman fielded the ball, but had no play.

"All I told them is I wanted a quick start," said Maryknoll coach John Uekawa. "They did what was asked. They're very focused. It's a matter of putting a complete game together."

Warriors starter Jamie Millwood issued two walks and threw four wild pitches in the first.

"We kind of had some miscommunications out there, but we were able to jump back, and that's all that matters," Millwood said.

From the second inning on, it was all Kamehameha.

The Warriors scored three in the second to take a 4-3 lead. One run scored on an error by the third baseman and Tia Perreira had a two-run double.

Perreira finished 3 for 4 with three doubles, three runs scored and three RBIs.

"With Tia in the lead-off spot, she played that role well, and she set the momentum," Yamaguchi said. "With each at-bat, she got stronger and we need that in the (No.) 1 spot."

Kamehameha put the game away by scoring seven runs on eight hits in the third, which made it 11-3.

The Warriors tacked on eight runs in the fourth on six hits and three errors.

Meanwhile, Kamehameha's Millwood found her grove after the rough start. She retired eight in a row before being replaced by Leiana Naki-Kaonohi to start the fourth. Naki-Kaonohi struck out five over the final two innings. The game was shortened to five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Naki-Kaonohi finished 2 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs, while Kahealani Yamaguchi, Millwood and Marche Llanos each drove in two runs. Nine of the Warriors' 18 hits went for extra bases.

"I'm really excited with this team because everybody is capable of getting big hits and we also can play the small game if we need to," said Millwood, who hit clean-up.

Maryknoll, which is competing in Division II, has no seniors on its roster. Plus, seven of the 14 Spartans didn't play softball before reaching high school, according to Uekawa.

"Every game is a battle," he said.
