Wai'anae man, 23, killed in car crash

A 23-year-old Wai'anae man was killed yesterday when the truck he was driving struck a utility pole on Wai'anae Valley Road.

It was O'ahu's second traffic fatality in two days and the 14th of 2010, compared with 16 at this time in 2009.

According to police, the truck was headed south and speeding when it veered to the right and struck the pole near Plantation Road.

The driver was wearing a seat belt and the vehicle's air bags did deploy.

The crash occurred at 1:22 p.m. in clear conditions and in light traffic. The man was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:05 p.m.

UH GROUP ENDORSES ABERCROMBIE

The University of Hawai'i Professional Assembly board of directors has endorsed former U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie for governor, citing his dedication to "the fundamental values that have been at the core of Hawai'i's social contract for the last 50 years."

UHPA represents about 3,500 faculty members in the university system.
