Kokua Hawai'i Foundation and University of Hawai’i Cinema Series will kick off World Water Week on Sunday with the documentary “Tapped.”
Following a 5 p.m. screening in the UH’s Spalding Auditorium, Stuart Coleman, Hawai'i Coordinator for the Surfrider Foundation will facilitate a town hall question-answer session. Admission is $5 for general public and $3 for Kokua Hawai'i Foundation members and UH-Manoa students.
From the producers of “Who Killed the Electric Car?” and “I.O.U.S.A.,” “Tapped” provides a behind-the-scenes look into the unregulated bottled water industry.
The film serves as a powerful portrait of the lives affected by the bottled water industry, particularly those caught at the intersection of big business and the public’s right to water.
The impact of plastic water bottles in Hawai'i is especially pronounced. In addition to the enormous environmental and monetary costs associated with importation and disposal, plastic from the single-use bottles litters our beaches and endangers wildlife.
Kokua Hawai'i Foundation supports environmental education in Hawaii's schools and communities. The organization has a variety of programs focused on sustainability, recycling, environmental field trips and service learning. In 2007, the foundation launched the Plastic Free Hale'iwa Coalition to reduce the amount of single-use plastics distributed in the Hale'iwa community.
