West Hawaii targeted for state's first 'School Impact District'

Hawaii may see its first School Impact District on the Big Island when the Hawaii State Board of Educations Administrative Services Committee meets next week to consider the measure.
The proposed West Hawaii school impact district encompasses nearly all of the North Kona and South Kohala judicial districts.
A new district would result in school impact fees being paid to the Department of Education to help cover land and construction costs for new schools. Currently, developers provide fair-share contributions of land and cash to the DOE for new schools.
Act 245 requires the BOE to designate school impact districts where enrollment growth is expected to create the need for new or expanded schools over the next 25 years.
