One of the largest swells to hit Oahu’s south shore in several years kept lifeguards busy today.

Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city’s Emergency Services Department, reported that lifeguards in the Ala Moana-Waikiki area made five rescues, 28 assists using personal watercraft and issued more than 500 preventive actions.
Wave faces are in the 6- to 10-foot range, Cheplic said.
He said the swell is expected to peak tonight but remain high through the weekend.
Beachgoers are advised to exercise extreme caution and to check with lifeguards before entering the water.
