No. 13 Cal beats UH in softball

Jolene Henderson pitched a four-hitter as No. 13 California defeated Hawai'i, 5-1, yesterday in the final game of the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Henderson, the tournament's Most Outstanding Pitcher, struck out six and walked five. Lindsey Ziegenhirt hit a three-run homer for the Golden Bears (23-6).
Kelly Majam, the tournament's MVP, hit her fifth homer of the tournament and 15th of the season for the Rainbow Wahine (22-11), who finished the tournament with a 4-2 record.
Earlier, Majam and Melissa Gonzalez hit solo homers, and Traci Yoshikawa added a two-run shot as UH beat Lipscomb (20-7), 5-4.
Majam's homer tied it at 4-4 with one out in the seventh, and Gonzalez scored the winning run on an error an out later.
ELSEWHERE
Hawai'i Pacific sweeps: Ciera Senas capped a 3-for-5 day with a two-run single in the top of the seventh inning as Hawai'i Pacific beat host Notre Dame de Namur, 10-9, to complete a sweep of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader at Belmont, Calif. In the first game, Sherise Musquiz scattered seven hits as the Sea Warriors (19-11, 11-1) beat the Argos (6-16, 4-10), 4-0.
Hilo splits: Tessa Truong had two hits and four RBIs as Hawai'i-Hilo beat Dixie State, 9-7, in the first game of a PacWest doubleheader at St. George, Utah. In the second game, Lauren Folta pitched a six-hitter as the Red Storm (11-8, 6-4) beat the Vulcans (21-8, 17-7), 9-0.
Chaminade swept: Montana Lucas homered in each game as Grand Canyon (22-4, 12-4) swept Chaminade (13-15, 10-10), 10-0 and 7-3, in a PacWest doubleheader at Phoenix.
BASEBALL
HPU SWEEPS
Tyler Davis' two-run triple in the sixth inning broke a 4-4 tie as Hawai'i Pacific beat Academy of Art, 6-5, yesterday to complete a sweep of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader at Moraga, Calif.
Blake Amaral and Kenny Turner each had two hits for the Sea Warriors (20-5, 14-2). Kenny Rollins hit a two-run homer for the Urban Knights (2-19, 2-10).
In the opener, Chad Wagner allowed three hits and two runs over six innings, and Paul Sandoval pitched a perfect seventh as HPU won, 7-2.
SURFING
GARCIA FINISHES 5TH
Sunny Garcia of Wai'anae tied for fifth place at the Drug Aware Pro men's surfing contest yesterday at Margaret River, Australia.
The final day of the event was completed in 2- to 3-foot waves.
Garcia was ousted in the quarterfinals by Florida's Cory Lopez. Garcia, 40, was the oldest surfer to advance to the final day.
Australian Josh Kerr, 25, won the contest.
Garcia received $2,950 and moved up to No. 32 on the ASP Men's World Ranking.
BODYSURFING
PIPELINE EVENT TODAY
The Ke Kaha Nalu Hanana 'O Ehukai bodysurfing contest is scheduled to run today at the Banzai Pipeline.
Most of the state's top bodysurfers are expected to participate, including defending champion Mike Stewart, Mark Cunningham, Steve Kapela and Kai Santos.
The one-day contest is run by the North Shore Lifeguard Association, and several O'ahu lifeguards are expected to participate.
