Lawrence Chew pitched six innings of four-hit ball with six strikeouts and Mid-Pacific pounded out 15 hits last night in a 14-6 Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball victory over Kamehameha.

The win at Ala Wai Field improved the Owls to 3-1 in the ILH, one game behind first-place 'Iolani (5-1) and a half-game behind second place Saint Louis (4-1) and Punahou (3-1-1). Kamehameha fell to 2-3-1.

"It's a good win," said Chew, a junior left-hander. "Everybody can beat each other in the ILH, so you gotta win games when you have the chance. It boosts our confidence."

Chew allowed a two-run homer to Jacob Meyer in the bottom of the first inning and two more runs in the third, but then threw 3 1/3 innings of no-hit, shutout ball after that.

"Coach (Dunn Muramaru) just told me to challenge them with my fastball, because I wasn't challenging them in the early innings," Chew said. "In the later innings, I was pumping it more, throwing harder."

MPI led 1-0 in the top of the first after Justin Protacio led off with a single, stole second and scored on Ryan Muraoka's single to right. After Meyer's home run over the left-field fence, the Owls took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second inning by scoring two runs on two hits and two errors. The Warriors took the lead back at 4-3 in the third after two hits, an error and a passed ball.

But Mid-Pac took the lead for good in the bottom half, after a run-scoring single by Marcus Doi and Dane Fujinaka's RBI double to left to make it 5-4. The Owls added three runs in the fifth on three hits and an error, then made it 10-4 in the sixth after Muraoka's solo home run and Jordan Obata's RBI single.

Meanwhile, Kamehameha could not break through against Chew, even after loading the bases with one out in the fifth. He escaped that jam with a strikeout followed by Tyler Yoshizawa's diving stab of a hard grounder to second and flip to shortstop Protacio for the force play.

"We didn't have good at-bats when we had opportunities, and we didn't take care of the ball defensively," said Warriors coach Vern Ramie, whose team committed six errors. "We had physical errors, but we also had mental errors that don't go into the book as errors, but still put us into bad positions."

MPI extended the lead to 14-4 in the seventh after two hits and two errors, and Chew was replaced by freshman right-hander Doi in the bottom half.

Kamehameha scored two runs on two hits and two errors in the final inning, but Doi induced a game-ending grounder to second to close out the victory.

Fujinaka went 4 for 5 with two doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored, Obata went 3 for 3 with two runs and Muraoka went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs.

Kamehameha's Meyer went 3 for 3 with a double, home run, three RBIs and two runs, Kainoa Inafuku had three runs and Bryson Kenolio had a double.
