David Freitas and Collin Bennett each drove in two runs to back the strong pitching of Zach Gallagher and Hawai‘i beat Long Beach State, 8-2, today in a non-confererence college baseball game at Blair Field in Long Beach, Calif.
Gallagher (1-1) went six innings, allowing a run and six hits with three strikeouts for the Rainbows (12-9), winners of five in a row. Jesse Moore entered the game with the tying run on second and go-ahead run on first with one out in the seventh, inheriting the jam from Blair Walters. Moore picked the runner off of second and retired the next batter and added two more scoreless innings for his second save of the season.
Nate Underwood (1-1) allowed three runs, three hits and a walk with one strikeout in 4 2/3 innings for the Dirtbags (9-10).
Freitas had a sacrifice fly and bases-loaded walk, while Bennett had a two-run single for the Rainbows.
The Dirtbags took a 1-0 lead in the third. Catcher Kellen Hoime reached on a bunt single to third, took second on a balk and an out later, moved to third when Jordan Casas grounded out to second and scored on Joey Terdoslavich’s single to right.
Hawai‘i tied it in the top of the fourth when Greg Garcia led off with a triple to right-center and one out later, scored on David Freitas’ sacrifice fly to left.
The Rainbows took the lead in the fifth. Kevin Macdonald led off with a home run to left to put UH ahead, 2-1. Jeffrey Van Doornum tripled to right-center and scored Pi‘ikea Kitamura’s sacrifice fly to right to make it 3-1.
Blair Walters came in for Gallagher to start the seventh. Steve Tinoco led off with a single to center, took second on pinch hitter Jonathan Jones’ sacrifice and scored on Matt Duffy’s single to right to pull LBSU to 3-2. Duffy went to second on KIrk Singers’ single to left. Walters was lifted for Jesse Moore, who picked Tinoco off second before retiring Hoime on a fly to right to preserve UH’s lead.
Hawai‘i sent nine batters to the plate in a three-run eighth. With one out, Eddie Magallon hit Sean Montplaisir with a pitch. Magallon pulled for Ryan Donohue. Montplaisir stole second before Roquemore was hit by a pitch. Garcia popped out to short, but a wild pitch moved the runners up a base with Wong at the plate. Wong walked to load the bases. Cris Trout replaced Donohue on the mound for the Dirtbags to face Freitas, who walked to force in a run to increase UH’s lead to 4-2. Collin Bennett’s two-run single to left moved Freitas to second and made it 6-2.
Josh Corrales started the ninth for LBSU and walked Kitamura, who went to second on Monplaisir’s sacrifice and to third on Roquemore’s single. Corrales’ pick-off throwing error to first allowed Kitamura to score and Roquemore to take third. Garcia singled up the middle to score Roquemore to make it 8-2.
