Hawaii land board discusses Mauna Kea plan

HONOLULU — The state Board of Land and Natural Resources is meeting in Hilo to consider whether to approve the University of Hawaii’s new Mauna Kea management plan.
The university’s Institute for Astronomy leases land at the summit, which hosts about a dozen of the world’s most advanced telescopes.
The new plan is designed to comply with a 2006 state court order requiring the school to consider how any project may affect the overall environmental and cultural resources at the summit.
Previously, the university had only examined how a proposed telescope would affect the immediately surrounding area.
Department of Land and Natural Resources staff are recommending that the board approve the plan.
The rare Neighbor Island meeting is being held Thursday.
