Kihei man sentenced for role in brawl

For his role in a bloody brawl outside a Kïhei bar two years ago, 30-year-old Kawika Franco was sentenced Monday to 30 days in jail.
A jury last year convicted him of a petty misdemeanor charge in the case.
Second Circuit Judge Richard Bissen gave Franco credit for the more than 30 days he had already spent in jail. Franco, of Kïhei, was also ordered to pay $50,877 in restitution jointly with co-defendant Shawn Kalani Brown.
The restitution is to pay for medical expenses of victim Jamie Alexander, 29, who did not have medical insurance when he was beaten in the early-morning hours of June 15, 2008, outside Oceans Beach Bar and Grill at Kukui Mall.
Brown, who was convicted of first-degree assault in the case, was sentenced in January to 10 years in prison with a mandatory minimum of three years and four months before he is eligible for parole.
Franco was convicted on a lesser charge of third-degree assault by mutual affray, a petty misdemeanor.
In the beating, Alexander suffered a facial fracture, broken right sinus and nose. He required three staples for a laceration to the back of his head and had surgery to implant a permanent metal plate in the left side of his face.
