Billy Kamau pitched a complete game with 10 strikeouts and hit a three-run triple yesterday to help Roosevelt hold off Moanalua, 4-3, in O'ahu Interscholastic Association baseball action.

The victory at Stevenson Middle School field improved the 10th-ranked Rough Riders to 6-1 in the OIA Red Conference Eastern Division, 1 1/2 games ahead of second-place and sixth-ranked Kailua (3-3). Seventh-ranked Moanalua fell to 2-3.

"I felt good, I had the mentality where I was hungry for the win," said Kamau, a senior right-hander.

That was evident since two outs in the bottom of the third inning, when he collided with his catcher, Cameron Fuchigami, on a popped up bunt between home plate and the pitcher's mound (Moanalua was the designated home team). Michael Egami scored from third base on the play, putting Nā Menehune up, 2-0, and Kamau bruised his right shin.

"That was my mistake, I should have called for (the pop up)," said Kamau, who needed several warm-up tosses before play resumed. "At first, I thought I couldn't (pitch), but then I thought I could fight through it."

Kamau got out of the inning with a strikeout, then got his chance for redemption in the fifth when he came to bat with two outs and Roosevelt trailing 2-1 with the bases loaded. Kamau sliced an outside fastball down into the right-field corner for a triple, putting the Rough Riders up, 4-2.

"I was thinking, 'This is my chance to get us back in the game,' " Kamau said.

Moanalua cut it to 4-3 with one out in the bottom of the seventh, after back-to-back doubles from Timothy Arakawa and pinch-hitter Jordan DePonte, who took third on the throw home. Ryan Cortez was then hit by a pitch and pinch runner Austin Inabata stole second, so cleanup batter Bronson Shim was intentionally walked to load the bases.

Kamau then induced a grounder near second base, which shortstop Randon Mamuad fielded cleanly before stepping on the bag and throwing to first for a game-ending double play.

"We had our chances, but you gotta give credit to (Kamau)," Nā Menehune coach Scott Yamada said. "He got injured, but he battled back."

Donato Gallano singled in Kaeo Kapana with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning as the host and No. 9 Sabers outlasted the Hurricanes.

Charles Kaalekahi pitched a complete game for Campbell, which scored two in the seventh to send it into extra innings. Chad Kaalekahi had an RBI single and Jaren Maghamil scored on a passed ball.

Both teams scored twice in the eighth.
