Baseball 'Bows hold off Cal State Fullerton, 10-7

Greg Garcia and David Freitas each drove in two runs to help Hawai‘i hold off Cal State Fullerton, 10-7, today to avoid a series sweep at Goodwin Field in Fullerton, Calif.

Matt Sisto (3-3) allowed six runs on 12 hits and a walk with four strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings for the Rainbows (13-11). Lenny Linsky added 2 2/3 scoreless for his fourth save. He came in with the tying run on deck in the seventh.
Tyler Pill (1-4) was tagged for five runs, six hits and a walk in 1 2/3 innings for the Titans (12-11).
Kolten Wong Collin Bennett and Kevin Macdonald each had three hits to lead the Rainbows’ 14-hit attack in winning their first game of the three-game series.
Hawai‘i sent nine batters to the plate in a five-run second in chasing Pill from the game. Bennett led off with a single and went to third on Macdonald’s double. Bennett was thrown out at the on a fielder’s choice grounder to short that put runners at first and second. After Christian Johnson flied out to left, Pi‘ikea Kitamura’s RBI single put UH ahead, 1-0. A throwing error by the center fielder allowed the runners to advance to third and second before Matt Roquemore walked to load the bases. Garcia’s two-run single moved Roquemore to second, where he scored on Wong’s double to right to make it 4-0. Pill was pulled for Dylan Floro, whose first pitch was wild scored Garcia and sent Wong to third before David Freitas was called out on strikes.
The Titans came back with two in the bottom of the second. Pill, who also is the DH, led off with a single, and went to third on Corey Jones’ single and scored on Nick Ramirez’s sacrifice fly to center that allowed Jones to take second. After Joey Siddons struck out, Zach Tanida doubled home Jones to pull CSUF to 5-2.
The Titans pulled to 5-3 on Carlos Lopez’s two out, solo home run in the third inning.
CSUF pulled to within on in the fourth. Siddons singled wiht one out, stole second and an out later, scored on Austin Kingsolver’s single to make it 5-4.
Hawai‘i scored four in the fifth to pad its lead. Garcia led off with a double and went to third on Wong’s single. Freitas’ ground-rule double to right made it 6-4. Floro was pulled for Kyle Mertins. Bennett’ greeted Mertins with a two-run double to center. Macdonald’s single to center moved Bennett to third. A wild pitch on ball four to Johnson scored Bennett to make it 9-4 and put runners at first and second before Kitamura grounded into an inning-ending double play.
The Titans scored twice in the sixth to chase Sisto. Ramirez led off with a single before Siddons struck out. Pinch hitter Billy Marcoe and Kingsolver each singled to load the bases and end Sisto’s day. Alex Capaul came in and got Colon to ground to third for a force at second that scored a run and put runners at the corners. Brown’s RBI single moved Colon to second and pulled CSUF to 9-6.
Hawai‘i added a run against the left-handed Nick Ramirez, who moved from first base to the mound to start the seventh inning. Freitas led off with a single and took second on Bennett’s single. Both advanced on Macdonald’s sacrifice and Van Doornum was intentionally walked to load the bases. Pinch hitter Josh Chevalier’s sacrifice fly to left made it 10-6.
The Titans got a run back in the seventh. With one out, Jones was hit by a pitch from Capaul, who also gave up a single to Ramirez and was pulled for Lenny Linsky. Pinch hitter Anthony Hutting grounded to short for a force at second to put runners at the corners. Marcoe followed with an RBI single to pull CSUF to 10-7. Pinch runner Matt Orloff and Marcoe pulled off a double steal to put runners in scoring position, but Linsky struck out Kingsolver to end the threat.
