The wild and intense chase for the Interscholastic League of Honolulu's baseball first-round title will fittingly be extended by one more day.

Freshman Marcus Doi's bases-loaded bloop single to right field scored Tyler Yoshizawa from third base with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning yesterday to lift Mid-Pacific to a pulsating 13-12 victory over visiting Punahou.

MPI finished the ILH first round at 7-1, tied for first place with Saint Louis (7-1). Saint Louis defeated Damien, 2-0, earlier yesterday afternoon. Mid-Pac and Saint Louis will meet in a one-game playoff at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow at Ala Wai Field, with the winner clinching the first-round title and automatic state tournament berth.

Six-time defending state champion Punahou (5-2-1) led yesterday's game 5-0 in the first inning and 11-5 in the third, but MPI rallied back both times, eventually taking a 12-11 lead in the bottom of the sixth. The Buffanblu then tied it at 12-12 in the top of the seventh.

"We're a fighting team, and the game is not over until the seventh inning," said Doi, who was also the winning pitcher after 4 2/3 innings of relief. "We knew we had the heart to come back, and we had some clutch hits and made some clutch plays."

After Punahou tied it at 12-12 in the top of the seventh on Michael Suiter's run-scoring single to center field, Doi induced a forceout to second and — one batter later — a popup to first to end the inning.

In the bottom half, Yoshizawa led off with a single to left, and Justin Protacio followed with a ground single to center, advancing Yoshizawa to third. Nik Alarcio was then intentionally walked to load the bases, and Ryan Muraoka popped out to short right field in foul territory, holding Yoshizawa at third.

On a 1-0 pitch, Doi then poked a blooper to right just in front of charging right fielder Jeremy Ioane, and Yoshizawa easily scored standing up ahead of the throw.

"It was a slider away, and Coach (Dunn Muramaru) had been telling me to look at that all day," Doi said. "I just sat back on it and took it to right field. Sometimes something small can be the biggest thing."

The single ended a nearly three-hour roller coaster of a game which started with Suiter's leadoff home run in the first inning. That sparked a five-run rally, but the Owls got a run back in the bottom half and then scored four runs on three hits and two errors in the second to tie it at 5-5.

The Buffanblu struck back in the third with six runs on three hits and two errors to make it 11-5. But Mid-Pac again rallied back, scoring five runs in the fourth on five hits highlighted by Jordan Obata's two-run double to close the margin to 11-10.

"We tried to hold them down, but they put the ball in play and we couldn't get outs," Punahou coach Eric Kadooka said.

The Owls took a 12-11 lead in the sixth after three hits, two errors, two passed balls and a wild pitch. The Buffanblu then tied it again in the seventh after Ryan Yamane led off with a walk, advanced to second on Brent Fukushima's sacrifice bunt and scored on Suiter's single.

"This is a good fun place," Muramaru said of MPI's Damon Field. "But it's scary, too, because you're never out of it."
