'EWA BEACH — Jumping out early on offense and then riding senior ace Katie Manumā's arm, Campbell blanked Mililani, 7-0, yesterday in a key O'ahu Interscholastic Association softball showdown.

The Sabers improved to 7-0 in the OIA Red Conference Western Division; the defending state champion Trojans fell to 4-1.

Campbell scored three runs in each of the first two innings, and Manumā finished with a six-hitter and four strikeouts.

"We didn't see Mililani in the preseason, so we didn't know what to expect," said Manumā, a right-hander who has signed a national letter of intent to play for Brigham Young University next season. "(The early lead) felt good, it took the pressure off."

Manumā helped the cause on offense, driving home Sharae Esprecion with the Sabers' first run on a one-out single in the bottom of the first inning. Daylene Antonio and Taylor Rosa-Ramon each was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 3-0. Manumā had another RBI single in the second, followed by Collette Black's sacrifice fly and a wild pitch to score courtesy runner Tiana Rosario and put Campbell up, 6-0.

"My pitchers are young, and they just had a bad day," Mililani coach Rose Antonio said.

Daylene Antonio added a run-scoring single in the fourth to make it 7-0.

Manumā, meanwhile, steadily worked toward her third shutout of the OIA season by not allowing a runner past second base over the final five innings.

She was especially effective against the Trojans' top of the order, which features 2009 Advertiser All-State selections Kristi Oshiro, Rebecca Lee and Courtney Senas. Manumā set them down in order to lead off the game and they went a combined 0 for 5 with one walk over the first four innings.

"Those are three of the best hitters in the state, and any time you set (the opponent) down 1-2-3 to start the game, it gives your team a boost," Sabers coach David Perreira said. "What I liked about Katie today was she hit her spots well and changed speeds."
