Trevor Wiseman, a do-everything player at Golden Valley High in Santa Clarita, Calif., is committed to joining the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team.

Chris Printz, the head coach at Golden Valley, said Wiseman accepted a scholarship offer from new Hawai'i head coach Gib Arnold over the weekend.

"This is a big surprise because Hawai'i really wasn't in the picture until the last minute," Printz said. "I know that Coach Arnold is new to Hawai'i, but I hadn't heard anything from Hawai'i until a week ago."

Arnold was hired as head coach of the Rainbow Warriors on March 20. He has been on a recruiting trip in the western United States for the past week.

Wiseman, who is listed at 6 feet 8, averaged around 20.5 points, 11.0 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game as a senior this past season, according to Printz.

"He's one of a kind," Printz said. "He's big enough to play down low, but he actually played point (guard) for us. He's a very gifted athlete with an unbelievable skill set."

Wiseman was selected as the co-Most Valuable Player of his league, and earned first-team All-California Interscholastic Federation honors in the 3A division.

Jordan Coleman of Calabasas High was also selected to that 3A all-state first team. Coleman has already signed a letter of intent to play for the 'Bows next season.

Wiseman and Coleman are both expected to play in a California all-star game on April 17.

According to Printz, Wiseman would be better suited at a wing position in college.

"I think Division I schools could use him as a point forward rather than a true point guard," Printz said. "He's a matchup nightmare. He can go low and post up, but he can also bring the ball upcourt. He's just unique in that he can rebound on the defensive end, and then bring it up himself on the offensive end and score."

UC Riverside was the only other NCAA Division I program to offer Wiseman a scholarship, although UNLV and UCLA were among the other schools recruiting him.

Printz said Wiseman still needs to complete a "core" course to qualify for NCAA Division I, so several teams were waiting for him to pass that course.

"He has some work to finish in the classroom, but we don't see that being a problem," Printz said.

Once he qualifies academically, Wiseman will have four seasons of eligibility.

Wiseman is expected to sign a national letter of intent during the "late" period, which starts on April 14. Hawai'i will have at least four scholarships to fill, although that number could increase pending roster moves by Arnold.

Per NCAA rules, Arnold can not comment on recruits until the letter of intent is signed.
