Hawaii to mark first year of swine flu outbreak

Associated Press

HONOLULU — Wednesday marks the one-year anniversary of the swine flu virus reaching Hawaii.

The state Department of Health says the first documented cases of H1N1 in Hawaii occurred May 5, 2009, when a husband and wife and an unrelated child were confirmed to have the virus.

In June, the World health Organization declared a pandemic, the first of its kind in 40 years. President Obama declared a national emergency Oct. 25.

To mark the one-year anniversary, state Department of Health officials will gather Wednesday to look at Hawaii's response to the pandemic and the continuing effort to protect residents of the state. The 11:30 a.m. meeting is to be held in the third floor conference room at Kinau Hale, 1250 Punchbowl St.
