Green Harvest mission on Kauai nets 200 marijuana plants

The Garden Island

LIHU'E — The most recent Green Harvest mission on Kaua'i netted 200 marijuana plants and several arrests, county officials said Monday.

Over the past couple weeks, pot plants were removed from locations across the island in a multi-agency eradication mission conducted through the Domestic Cannabis Eradication and Suppression Program, a county news release states.

On April 20, a search warrant was executed on a farm, which resulted in the recovery of 1.6 pounds of processed marijuana and the seizure of a 1993 Nissan pickup truck. One person was arrested and charged with first-degree promotion of a detrimental drug, the release says.

On April 28, police executed a search warrant on a residence, which yielded 25 grams of processed marijuana, 4.3 grams of cocaine, and numerous drug paraphernalia. Authorities confiscated $510 in cash.

Eight people were charged with third-degree promotion of a detrimental drug. Two of these individuals were also charged with criminal contempt of court and one was charged with all of these offenses following a presentation to the Grand Jury.

The names of the arrested individuals were not included in the release "for fear of possibly compromising other related and unrelated investigations," KPD officials said.

The amount of taxpayer dollars spent on the overall mission was also not included in the release. There was no response by press time to a request for this information.

Kaua'i police recently made a presentation at Kapa'a Elementary School on the dangers of smoking marijuana and the Kaua'i Police Department's marijuana eradication program.

Approximately 850 students and teachers attended the event, which also included a question-and-answer session.

The agencies that assisted KPD with the eradication effort include: state Department of Land and Natural Resources; Hawai'i National Guard; Honolulu Police Department; and the U.S. Coast Guard.
