Honolulu waste hauler fined $40,000
The company with a city contract to ship waste to the Mainland was fined $40,400 by the state Department of Health today for storage violations.
Hawaiian Waste Systems is being fined for storing wrapped waste bales too long at its Campbell Industrial Park wrapping facility, and for storing shipping containers of waste at two nearby locations without first getting an OK from the Health Department.
DOH also wants Hawaiian Waste to take corrective action.
Despite starting to accept waste from the city last Sept. 28, the company has yet to begin shipping to a Mainland landfill as promised. Its main holdup has been failure to obtain clearance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to begin the shipping.
