VOLCANO, Hawaii — Breaking into a rental car at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is costing a Big Island man nine months in federal prison.

Park Ranger Mardie Lane said Thursday that 31-year-old Ashley Kai Larita was also sentenced April 12 in U.S. District Court to three years supervised release and ordered to pay $632 in restitution.

Lane says Larita broke into the car on New Year's Day 2008, in the parking lot of the park's popular Kilauea Iki Overlook. He was convicted of felony unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle with intent to commit a crime.

Park Superintendent Cindy Orlando says the National Park Service has "zero tolerance for those who victimize others."
