Maui firefighters try to contain two brushfires

Advertiser Staff

Maui firefighters Friday night were monitoring brushfires in Olowalu and near Kahului Airport.

The Olowalu fire, which began Monday in the Ukumehame area, burned an estimated 1,100 acres and was 90 percent contained yesterday, Maui County said.

Strong winds were present, and firefighters were monitoring the area for flare-ups.

Firefighters were also monitoring a brushfire that burned three acres in Spreckelsville near the airport.

That brush fire was first reported at 10:03 p.m. Thursday. It was 90 percent contained Friday.

Firefighters from the State Airports Division and Maui County were faced with areas thick with hau plants and winds of 35 mph. Air One provided assistance with water drops Friday morning.

The area is populated by homeless encampments and one cat in a cage was removed by animal control personnel. As a precaution, an additional firebreak was created to protect nearby homes that are about half a mile away.
