Chaminade honors Marianist heritage at Spring commencement

Chaminade University President Bro. Bernard Ploeger, SM, will once again help in the conferring of degrees on the university's graduating students.

Chaminade University will hold its 2010 Spring Commencement Ceremony on Monday, May 10, at 7 p.m., in the Neal S. Blaisdell Arena to celebrate the conferring of degrees on more than 400 of its students. Free and open to the public, the event will feature as its keynote speaker Brother Stephen M. Glodek, S. M., who has served as the Provincial of the Marianist Province of the United States since 2002, when four U.S. provinces merged into one. A special commendation will also be given to the Society of Mary in recognition of more than 125 years of the Marianists serving in the islands.

As Provincial, Bro. Glodek is the chancellor of Chaminade University of Honolulu, chancellor of St. Mary's University in San Antonio and the vice chairman of the board of trustees of the University of Dayton.

Prior to his current appointment, Glodek was Provincial of the Marianists' New York Province for nine years. He received a bachelor's degree in English Literature from Columbia University in New York, and earned two master's degrees from St. John's University in New York, one in historical theology and one in child psychology. He began his career teaching psychology and religion and serving as a school counselor at New York secondary schools. In 1985, he entered provincial administration for the New York Province. From 1996 to 2001, he served in leadership roles for the Conference of Major Superiors of Men of the United States, serving as president of the Conference of Major Superiors of Men (CMSM) from 1999-2001 and as chair of the board of trustees of the Center for the Study of Religious Life in Chicago, Illinois from 2003-2009. Widely published in Catholic and Marianist periodicals, he has also had a collection of poetry published.

Student speakers include undergraduate speaker Kuldip Singh Shergill, Jr., and graduate studies speaker Stephanie Hoffman. Shergill graduates with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting and has been recognized as Chaminade's Outstanding Graduate in Accounting and its Outstanding Service-Learning Student. Hoffman completed both her Master of Science and Bachelor of Science degrees in Forensic Sciences at Chaminade and has been honored as this year's Outstanding Graduate Student for Forensic Sciences.
