It took a strong headwind to limit Ashley Satterwhite's winning times.

Other than the strong gusts at yesterday's Interscholastic League of Honolulu track and field championships, little has held back the Punahou senior this year from emerging as the state's top sprinter. Being able to run injury-free for once, Satterwhite has continuously improved on her times this season and currently has the state's top marks in 100-, 200-, and 400-meter dashes.

"Last year, I was hurt the whole season so I was just battling injuries the whole season," said Satterwhite, who helped her Buffanblu win the ILH team title. "This year I'm healthy and that's the biggest difference.

"It's great not to have to worry and go out there and win and not worry about injuries."

Satterwhite won the 100 in 12.84 seconds and the 200 in 25.65 while racing into the wind at Kamehameha's Kūnuiākea Stadium. Along with Sari Kwan, Kylie Chun and Lahaina Zoller, they broke the meet record in the 4x100 relay with a winning time of 49.81. Satterwhite also ran on the winning 4x400 relay team with Julia Brand, Kyleigh Mann and Zoller. Zoller won the 400 and Brand won the 300 hurdles.

"We all spend a lot of time with each other, we all have the same goals, we all want to win, we all want to go hard every time," Satterwhite said of the 4x100 team. "We all do it for each other, we're just a really strong team."

Regan Balmoja broke the record in the girls pole vault by clearing 10 feet, 7 inches for Punahou and teammate Christine Tsai won the long jump (16-7 1/2), triple jump (36-1 1/2) and high jump (5-0). Mann won the 1,500 and 800, and the team effort was a glimpse of what's coming at next week's state championships. Punahou has won five of the last six state team titles.

Yesterday it won the ILH title with 218 points. Kamehameha was second with 112.

"The wind was ridiculous, probably one of the worst winds we had all season," Satterwhite said. "The times really showed how much the wind affected people."

Other girls winners were Kamehameha's Taisha-Ann Santiago (discus), Kamehameha's Kaimilani Zablan (shot put), 'Iolani's Abrianna Johnson-Edwards (100 hurdles), and Punahou's Elli Brady (3,000).

ZANE SPRINTS AWAY

Punahou's Michael Zane dominated the sprints in the boys races, winning the 100 and 200 and anchoring the winning 4x100 relay team. In the 100, Zane closed in on Saint Louis' Jeremy Tabuyo near the finish line to win in 11.51. Tabuyo, who turned in a time of 10.98 in Wednesday's trials, was second in 11.56.

Zane won the 200 in 22.77 and anchored the winning 4x100 relay team. Along with Tim Kamana, Brian Suite, and Jeff Pedrina, they won in 42.89.

"Last year, I never got this opportunity and it feels awesome," Zane said. "It's all because of my coach."

Missing from the finals was Damien's Jonathan Padron. Last year's state 100 champion, Padron sat out the past month with an injury, but ran in Wednesday's trials.

"He makes us compete and run to our potential," Zane said. "He makes us all better and we're all hoping he gets back out there."

Despite the conditions, Kamehameha's Jordan Thibodeau came extremely close in breaking the 1,500 record. Running a strong race where he held a big lead, Thibodeau finished in 4:08.38, missing the meet record by 0.02 seconds. He later won the 800, rallying on the last lap and closing in on teammate Alexander Ortega in the final stretch to win in 1:59.59. Ortega was second in 1:59.78.

Kamehameha scored 182 points to win the boys team title with Lake Kaai winning the shot put, Wave Ryder taking the long jump, and Keanu Haina taking the triple jump. Punahou was second with 119.

"Our team is really close this year," said Kamehameha's Isaiah Sato, who was second in the 1,500 and fourth in the 800. "We bonded, we all know each other and we help each other work hard. We care about each other and it's not about ourselves, it's about our team."

Mid-Pacific's Daniel Wagner won the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles. Other boys winners were 'Iolani's Borys Pleskacz (3,000), Punahou's Kaiwi Crabb (discus), Punahou's OJ Haugen (high jump), 'Iolani's Troy Conant (pole vault) and Punahou's KT Tuumalo (400).

The state meet is next Friday and Saturday at Kūnuiākea Stadium.
