Maui police are planning a dawn-to-dusk crackdown on speeding on major highways Tuesday through Thursday, coinciding with National Police Week, the Maui News reported.

Stepped-up enforcement will be done in the Wailuku, Lahaina and Kīhei police districts, said Lt. Michael Kaho'ohanohano, commander of the police Traffic Section.

He said the goal is to stop aggressive drivers, noting that speeding can lead to road rage and collisions.

Of the seven traffic deaths on Maui County roads this year, three were directly related to speeding, Kaho'ohanohano said.

That includes the April 21 crash that killed a 30-year-old Kīhei man when his Jeep went off Honoapi'ilani Highway at Ukumehame, landing on the rocky shoreline below.
