Hawaii Self Storage (HSS) delivered new books to 160 first graders at Kapolei Elementary School this morning as part of the company's Lockers for Literacy program. HSS staff also read the book, OINK? by Margie Palatini, to the students.

"As a locally owned company, we have made it our mission to give back to the community," said Hawaii Self Storage Vice President Shaun Salvador. "Since we started the program in 2007, Lockers for Literacy has donated 2,650 new books to 13 elementary schools, in an effort to promote literacy. Thus far, we have given 700 new books to seven elementary schools this year. We hope the first graders of Kapolei Elementary get as much out of reading this book, which is theirs to keep, as Hawaii Self Storage does from donating it."

OINK? tells the story of two sloppy, dim-witted pigs named Thomas and Joseph. While the two pigs are content living in their slovenly ways, other farm animals want them to clean up their area. Even though the other animals try to show them how it's done, the pigs can't seem to do anything right. Turns out, maybe being lazy isn't as dumb as it seems.

The Lockers for Literacy program is just one of the many programs Hawaii Self Storage has implemented as part of its Community Pride Initiative, which serves the keiki and families of Hawaii, including the Community Pride Fundraising Program, 12 annual high school scholarships and support of athletic teams. Hawaii Self Storage invests $150,000 annually into the company's Community Pride programs, and in 2009 was named Humanitarian of the Year by Inside Self Storage magazine, as well as Hawaii's Outstanding Advocate for Children in Youth by the Hawaii State House of Representatives.
