PUHI, Kaua'i — Kaua'i officials yesterday were trying to determine what started a fire that destroyed a warehouse used by Kaua'i Freight Service and three other businesses.
Dozens of firefighters from six stations responded to the fire, which was reported at 4:44 a.m. yesterday. Damage to the building and its contents was estimated to be in the millions, Kaua'i County officials said.
The fire was declared under control at 7 a.m. and fully extinguished by 4 p.m. No one was reported injured.
The fire started in the Kaua'i Freight Service section of the 13,000-square-foot warehouse, the county said. The freight company occupied about half of the building. The other tenants are Beachside Roofing, Hamco, and a surfboard and boat repair shop.
Police closed Puhi Road between Kaumuali'i Highway and Kaneka Road after the fire started. The road was reopened in the afternoon.
Firefighters from the Līhu'e, Kalāheo, Kōloa, Kapa'a, Hanapēpē and airport fire stations tackled the blaze.
An excavator operator with Kaua'i Freight Service assisted firefighters by removing corrugated metal from the warehouse to allow better access to the fire.
