Suzanne Jones, who coordinates islandwide recycling efforts for Honolulu's Department of Environmental Services, will talk trash at May 27's Professional Women's Network luncheon — discussing recent initiatives to expand O'ahu's curbside recycling, and other recycling topics.

Admission for guests of Network members is $38; $43 for others; cash and checks only at the door. Early bird reservations, due by Friday, are $35. 45 HONORED FOR WATER-SAVING EFFORTS

Forty-five O'ahu students were awarded top honors in the Honolulu Board of Water Supply's "Stop the Drop" poster and poetry contest.

Student entries focused on a single water-saving practice: leak detection. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the average home can waste more than 10,000 gallons of water a year from running toilets, dripping faucets and other leaks. Board of Water Supply officials point out that leak detection is simple. Just turn off all water fixtures and then check to see if the water meter (the red arrow or black triangle) is moving. If it is, there's a leak.

Winning artwork and poems will be featured in the Board of Water Supply's 2011 water conservation calendar, available at the end of this year. The artwork is online at www.boardofwatersupply.com.
