A team from Hilo High School took top honors at the Big Island Regional Remotely Operated Vehicles competition Saturday at the University of Hawai'i-Hilo.

Coming in second in the competition was the Highlands Intermediate School Team 2. Both school teams will represent the state at the international competition, June 24-26 at UH-Hilo.

Last week's regional competition was held at the UH-Hilo Student Life Center pool, where students used underwater robots, known as remotely operated vehicles, or ROVs, to navigate a terrain of mock active undersea volcanoes. This year's theme: "Undersea volcanoes and the role that ROVs play in their science and technology."

Guts and Glory: Waimea High.

Outside Da Box: Kea'au High.

Engineering Design: Hilo High.
