WARSAW, Poland — Top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki retired with an injured ankle in the Warsaw Open quarterfinals yesterday, jeopardizing her play at the French Open.

Wozniacki, ranked No. 3 behind the Williams sisters, lost the first set 6-3 to fifth-seeded Zheng Jie before retiring.

The U.S. Open finalist sprained her right ankle en route to the semifinals at Charleston in mid-April. In four tournaments since Charleston, the Dane has won only three singles matches.

"I have to talk to the doctor and see what we can do with this injury," Wozniacki said. "My ankle was taped really well today and I still felt some pain, so I don't know. I hope I can play (in the French Open)."

The Open starts on Sunday.

In the semifinals, Zheng will face unseeded Greta Arn of Hungary, who beat sixth-seeded Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

In the other semifinal, third-seeded Li Na of China will meet defending champion Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania.

Li beat Sara Errani of Italy, 6-2, 6-1, while unseeded Dulgheru rallied from 5-2 down in the second set to top Bulgarian qualifier Tsvetana Pironkova, 6-4, 7-5.

NICE, France — Leonardo Mayer of Argentina, ranked 59th in the world, beat fifth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, yesterday in the quarterfinals of the Open de Nice at Nice, France.

Mayer hadn't beaten any players in the top 30 since last year's French Open, where he beat American James Blake in the first round.

In his second career semifinal, Mayer will meet second-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain, who struggled to beat Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-4.

STRASBOURG INTERNATIONAL

STRASBOURG, France — Vania King of the United States reached the semifinals with a 6-4, 7-5 win yesterday over Anastasia Rodionova of Australia in the Strasbourg International at Strasbourg, France.

King, who upset second-seeded Elena Vesnina, will play Germany's Kristina Barrois, who defeated seventh-seeded Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia. 6-1, 7-5.

Top-seeded Maria Sharapova was leading 3-2 with a break when her match against Julia Goerges was suspended by rain. Anabel Medina Garrigues had won the first set 6-2 against Sofia Arvidsson when their match was stopped. Those matches will resume today, with the semifinals to follow.
