Man identified in drowning off Kaena Point
The 21-year-old free diver who died of an apparent drowning Saturday off Kaena Point has been identified as Cullen Santos, according to the Honolulu Medical Examiner.
County lifeguards on personal watercraft, searched along with firefighters and the U.S. Coast Guard when they found Santos' body at 1:30. Paramedics pronounced him dead at 1:57 p.m. Saturday.
He is believed to have been free diving with another man. His body was found on the Waialua side of Kaena Point.
Free diving has led to deaths on Oahu before, including that of photographer Sergio Goes, who died in 2008 in a free-diving accident.
An autopsy will be performed on Monday to determine the cause of death.
