Liane Horiuchi, a former three-time Advertiser All-State softball player from Kamehameha who recently completed a successful career at Purdue University, remained in critical condition last night with internal injuries following a car accident in Indiana late Friday night.
Ty Sing Chow, Horiuchi's coach at Kamehameha from 2001 through 2005, said Horiuchi's close friends told him late last night that she "is still bleeding internally and will need surgery again" today. Glenn Jicha, who coached Horiuchi on his Mililani Prep club softball team, said he was told by Horiuchi's family members that she "has already been through several surgeries and is still unconscious" as of 8:45 last night.
Jicha said he was told the injuries were to her pelvic bone and spleen.
Horiuchi, 23, was named to the All-Big Ten third team as a senior shortstop this past season and won several conference, district and national accolades for academic achievement. She was one of only 30 players in the country nominated for the Lowe's Senior CLASS award recognizing academic and athletic achievement along with character and community service.
Horiuchi had a 3.81 grade point average while majoring in Movement and Sport Sciences, with a goal to attend pharmacy school.
According to a report in the Lafayette (Ind.) Journal Courier, Horiuchi and three other women were injured when a car hit a utility pole west of Brookston, Ind., around 10:39 p.m. Friday. Jicha said according to family members, Horiuchi was a passenger and was pinned in the back seat.
Diane Lloyd, spokeswoman for Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, told The Advertiser at 5 p.m. yesterday that Horiuchi was in critical condition.
Horiuchi started her college career at Tennessee, where she helped the Volunteers make two College World Series appearances. She then transferred to Purdue and set school records for stolen bases with 43 this season and 85 for her career.
