HPU stops Angelo State, 1-0 in 10 innings in DII World Series

Advertiser Staff

Kozy Toriano scored on a throwing error in the top of the 10th inning to lift No. 3 Hawai'i Pacific to a 1-0 win over 19th-ranked Angelo State (Texas) today at the NCAA Division II Women's Softball World Series in St. Joseph, Mo.

The Sea Warriors (48-8) improved to 2-0 in the double-elimination tournament and will not play again until Sunday. The Ram Belles (49-13) suffered their first loss of the World Series.

Sherise Musquiz got things started in the 10th with a one-out single to center and Toriano followed with a base hit to right. Courtesy runner Pomaika'i Kalakau, who was running for Musquiz, went from first to third and Toriano took second on the rightfielder's throw to third. Caira Pires then drew a walk, but Kalakau was caught off the bag at third and thrown out by Angelo State catcher Kacie Easley. However, Toriano took third on the play and scored when pinch runner Malia Killam stole second and Easley's throw bounced into the outfield.
