Chad Owens will wrap up a three-island tour of youth football camps tomorrow at his alma mater, Roosevelt High School, two days before heading to training camp himself with the Canadian Football League's Montreal Alouettes.

Owens, a former second-team All-America receiver/return specialist for the University of Hawai'i, staged successful "All-Star Football" camps earlier this month in Hilo and Kapa'a.

Tomorrow's camp will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at Roosevelt's Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium. It is open to youth players ages 5 through 13, and registration begins at 7:30 a.m.

The cost is $40.

The camp coaching staff includes Owens (receivers/special teams), former Montana Division II All-American Brian Ah Yat (quarterbacks), former Linfield standout Jody Tyrell (defensive line), former UH standouts Nate Ilaoa (running backs) and Chris Brown (linebackers) and former Hawai'i and Utah player Jeremy Inferrera (offensive line). There also will be coaching available for defensive backs.

Owens said the Kaua'i camp, which included former UH standouts David Maeva and Mel Purcell, "exceeded our expectations by far."

Owens said besides position-specific instruction, his camp also offers motivational speeches from the coaches.

"Nate Ilaoa talked about goal-setting, Jody Tyrell talked about academics, Jeremy Inferrera talked about making choices," Owens said. "It's a great way for the kids to go into summer, to start getting ready for football."

Owens will be doing that himself, after a season spent mostly rehabilitating from knee surgery. He has spent the past six months with personal trainer Chris Kidawski, sprinting up the Koko Crater Trail and Wilhemina Rise.

"My knee feels great, I feel like I'm in unbelievable shape," Owens said.
