A man was killed Friday morning in a single-car crash on the Big Island.

Hawaii County firefighters said the accident happened about 7 a.m. on Highway 11, near the 34-mile marker, in the Volcano district.

Firefighters said the car was on the Kau-bound shoulder of the highway. They said units arrived to find off-duty firefighters treating one man, who was described as ambulatory. They said another man, who was trapped in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.
