Memorial Day Events
Several events this weekend will commemorate Memorial Day, a time to reflect on those who have passed on and to honor Americans who gave their lives for their country.
Among the events:
TOMORROW
• 10 a.m., Waikīkī War Memorial Service. Lt. Gen. Benjamin Mixon, commander of U.S. Army Pacific, will be the keynote speaker. Music and hula prelude will begin at 9:30 a.m., Waikīkī War Memorial Natatorium Park.
At the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl:
• 8:30 a.m., Daijingu Temple memorial service, Memorial Chapel.
• 10 a.m., Pacific American Foundation memorial service, at the Honolulu Memorial.
• 1 p.m., Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts will place small American flags and lei on more than 38,000 graves.
• 5:30 p.m., Vietnam veterans, family and friends will hold their annual Vietnam Veterans Candlelight Ceremony, with keynote speaker retired Marine Brig. Gen. Jerome Hagen.
MONDAY
• 8:30 a.m., annual Mayor's Memorial Day Ceremony, at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl, with keynote speakers U.S. Sen. Daniel K. Inouye and Mayor Mufi Hannemann.
• 9 a.m., Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony, Schofield Barracks Post Cemetery. The public is invited. Col. Matthew Margotta, commander, U.S. Army Garrison Hawai'i, will be the speaker. Attendees should enter through Schofield Barracks' Lyman Gate off Kunia Road. Drivers should allow for extra time at Lyman Gate because of new security measures in effect. Vehicles without a current military decal (DD Form 2220) or Army installation pass will be issued a temporary pass at the Lyman Gate Visitor Control Center. Drivers must provide a current driver's license, vehicle registration, safety inspection, proof of insurance and valid photo identification for each occupant to access the installation.
• 1 p.m., annual Governor's Memorial Day Ceremony, at Hawai'i State Veterans Cemetery, Kāne'ohe, with keynote speaker Gov. Linda Lingle.
• 12th annual Lantern Floating Hawai'i ceremony, at Magic Island. Lantern pickup and remembrance requests at 1 p.m.; ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m.; lighting of the Torch of Harmony at 7 p.m.
SHUTTLE BUS
A special Punchbowl shuttle bus will be available for the Mayor's Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday. Free parking will be available at the Fasi Civic Center for motorists who wish to board the bus at the Alapa'i transit center from 7 to 8 a.m. Fares are $2.25 for adults, $1 for youths. Bus passes will be accepted.
