Wahiawa's Jimmy Lowe took first place in his two age divisions and earned Sportsman of the Year honors at the USA National Singles Racquetball Championship held May 20 to 25 in Houston.

He was among nine players from Hawai'i who competed in the event that featured more than 500 participants.

Lowe, who has played for more than 25 years, won the men's open division in the 40-plus and 45-plus age group.

The other Hawai'i players were Janet M. Scheffer (2nd, women's B 50-over), Stephanie Christensen (2nd, women's open 35 over), Laura Natividad (3rd, women's A 45-over), Gally Carreira (2nd, men's D all ages), Leroy Woods Jr. (1st, men's D all ages), Joe Lee (3rd, men's open 55-over), Kawai Carreira (3rd, men's D all ages) and Tom McCloskey.

Open is the elite level, with A the next highest, and so on.

10 WAI'ANAE BOXERS AMONG ISLE CONTINGENT

The Hawai'i senior and junior Olympic boxing champions, including a record 10 from the Wai'anae Boxing Club, will compete in the USA Boxing National Championships, Sunday through June 14 in Denver.

All boxers are competing for spots on the USA-International team.

Wai'anae members in the open division are Eric Edwards, 25; Thomas Matias, 19; Antone Pereira, 18; Garren Rabelizsa, 18; and Michael Uemoto, 19. Members in the National Junior Olympics (15-16) are Jonathan Benitez, 15; Sharvelle De Castro, 15; Jonathan Dinong, 16; Dido Rodrigues, 15; and Kalynn Talalotu, 15.

WATERMAN TO PADDLE, RUN FOR LUNG ASSOCIATION

O'ahu waterman Jeff Kozlovich will take part in a sunrise-to-sunset running and paddling marathon Sunday to raise funds for the American Lung Association in Hawai'i.

Kozlovich will start running at Magic Island, through Ala Moana Center, head up trails leading to the summit of Ko'olau, jog down trails and streets to Kailua Beach, before beginning the paddleboard. That portion of the event will take him east past Lanikai, around Makapu'u, past Sandy Beach, Hanauma Bay, Hawai'i Kai, Kuli'ou'ou, 'Aina Haina, Kahala, Diamond Head and Waikiki and finish at Magic Island.

VERCRUYSSEN TAKES SIXTH IN EVENT IN SWEDEN

Hawai'i's Nani Vercruyssen took sixth place in the women's open division, despite being favored to win the finals, and the U.S. Trampoline Gymnastics Team won three golds and one silver at the international Frivolten Cup in Herrljunga, Sweden, last weekend.

Vercruyssen's next competition will be at the Canadian Cup in Calgary in late July.
