Five from Hawaii on ballot for all-star event

 • Wahiawa's Lowe tops in national racquetball

Five Hawai'i surfers are on the ballot for the inaugural WPS Surfing All-Stars event.

Dustin Barca, Kekoa Bacalso, Bruce Irons, Fred Patacchia Jr. and Roy Powers are among 47 international surfers listed on the ballot at the www.worldprosurfers.com Web site.

Fans who visit the site can vote for the surfer they want to see participate in the all-star event.

The six surfers receiving the most votes from the fans will be invited.

Four former world champion surfers have already been guaranteed spots in the event, including Kaua'i's Andy Irons. The others are Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning, and C.J. Hobgood.

The WPS Surfing All-Stars is being promoted as similar to baseball's home run derby, or basketball's slam-dunk contest.

The 10 "all-star" surfers will participate in a tow-in expression session during the U.S. Open of Surfing, which is scheduled for July 20 to 26 at Huntington Beach, Calif. They will also participate in a golf tournament and an autograph session during the week of the contest.

Voting will continue through June 14. Beach cleanup at Sandys on Monday

Team Primo is hosting a beach cleanup at Sandy Beach on Monday, starting at 8 a.m.

Volunteers of all ages can participate.

The cleanup is being held on Monday because that is the United Nations World Oceans Day.

Groups or individuals wanting to participate can send an e-mail inquiry to erinb@primobrewing.com.

More than 400 paddlers are expected to participate in the 31st annual Hui O He'e Nalu Independence Day Paddleboard and Stand Up Paddle Race. It is scheduled for July 4 on O'ahu's North Shore.

The 3 1/2-mile course will start at Sunset Beach and finish at Waimea Bay.

Paddlers can use a stock paddleboard, unlimited paddleboard, surfboard, stock SUP board or unlimited SUP board. There will be age-group divisions for each board category.

Entry fee is $30. Entry forms are available at www.dahui.com.
